I've written an application and I'd like to add a registration key/serial number to it (I'm big on minimum inconvinience - ala #4 at this Eric Sink article). My question is about where to store the \"activation\" once the application has been registered. As I understand it, I have a trade-off between storing the key in a public place, where all users can read it (but which requires admin rights to save there) and storing a per-user activation (but then each user on the computer will have to activate independantly). That gives me two choices:
Most pieces of commercial software come with some form of protection to deter unauthorized copying and installation. Although software makers use different methods to achieve this goal, one common approach involves asking the user to type in a product key or serial number, which is the case for both Microsoft Windows and Office.
This command by default prints the SHA1 fingerprint of acertificate. If the -v option is specified, thecertificate is printed in human-readable format, with additionalinformation such as the owner, issuer, serial number, and anyextensions. If the -rfc option is specified, certificate contents are printed using the printable encodingformat, as defined by the Internet RFC1421 standard
The entity that created the certificate is responsible forassigning it a serial number to distinguish it from othercertificates it issues. This information is used in numerous ways, for example when a certificate is revoked its serial number isplaced in a Certificate Revocation List (CRL).

Simple to use and deploy encryption tool that relies on hiding files from prying eyes as much as encryption to protect sensitive documents. Sadly, it transgresses many security standards by making the serial number a master password.
A fresh Windows installation feels wonderful. Whether you opt for a convenient Reset or reinstall Windows from scratch, remember to back up all your data. Don't forget to include the serial numbers and product keys of programs you would like to reinstall.
ProduKey is a small portable utility from NirSoft that can recover Microsoft product keys, including Windows, Office, and Exchange. It also supports Visual Studio and selected Adobe and Autodesk products. If you're looking for a serial number that doesn't fall into one of these software categories, try one of the other tools below.
The portable LicenseCralwer can recover a wide range of serial numbers and registration keys from the Windows registry. If you experience an error when trying to start up the program, try this: right-click the EXE file and select Run as administrator .
Point it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to search for serial numbers. The scan is thorough and will take much longer than with any of the other tools. Once the scan has completed, head to the File menu to save or encrypt the results. Under Tools you can also decode or encode LicenseCrawler dumps.
This key finder supports over 300 programs, runs on 32- and 64-bit systems and will recover serial numbers from a non-bootable Windows system. It retrieves serial numbers from the registry, meaning it won't find keys stored in the BIOS or outside the registry.
If you'd rather not use a third party tool, you can manually scan for product keys in the Windows registry. Press Windows key + R to launch the Run menu, type in cmd, and hit ENTER. Now search the registry for the software in question and keep hitting F3 until the serial numbers shows up in the data column.
If you found an old receipt or a credit card record, but not the serial number, don't despair! In that case, contact the manufacturer, explain your situation, and ask whether they can re-issue the serial number and what they need from you to do so. In the worst case, they might only be able to offer you a discount; ask for that too!
Losing the serial number to an important piece of software is no fun. Hopefully, you were able to recover all your product keys with these tips. To protect yourself from losing them again, print them out or store them safely in a password manager like LastPass.
Installation of the product is quick and simple When you do pay up, you'll receive a serial number and a registration key. Keep that serial number stored in a safe place. If you forget your master password, you can unlock the program by entering that serial number.
By default, Folder Lock simply overwrites the file or folder with zeroes. You can set it to overwrite with random bytes instead. If you're willing to have the shredder run a bit slower in order to more thoroughly erase the data, you can choose the three-pass Department of Defense algorithm, or the 35-pass Gutmann algorithm. But unless you anticipate law enforcement spending huge amounts of time and effort to recover your sinister deleted files, the single pass with zeroes or random numbers is probably sufficient. If shredding algorithms fascinate you, check out the 18 distinct algorithms in Advanced Encryption Package, most of which are government sanctioned.
It wipes out Windows temporary files, clears the clipboard, and deletes the system's memory of what folder you last used when opening or saving files. It clears recently used file history from Media Player, WordPad, and the Paint app. And it clears a number of Windows recently used file lists.
If that last statement worries you, congratulations\\u2014you've caught on to something. All of the encryption products I've reviewed recently have no backdoor, no way for the company to decrypt your files. But since the company clearly has your Folder Lock serial number, it could conceivably be ordered to supply it to law enforcement. You can disable this feature in settings, and I strongly suggest that you do so.
